SIPP and SSAS explained
A SIPP is a Self Invested Personal Pension Scheme usually administered by a professional trustee specialising in pension products. As the name suggests, the investor has control over how the funds are invested but the administration of the pension scheme is the responsibility of the professional trustee. A SIPP is a product created for the benefit of a single investor and the individual will normally have minimal obligations in terms of the administration of the scheme.
A SSAS is a Small Self Administered Pension Scheme which can either be managed by an employer or individual independently or via a professional trustee. Any single SSAS can be operated for the benefit of up to twelve members and can interact directly with the business linked to the members, known as the ‘Sponsoring Company’. In contrast to a SIPP, a SSAS can invest funds directly back into the Sponsoring Company via a loan back arrangement. A SSAS will require a higher level of direct involvement from the members and is often geared towards small groups of connected investors with similar investment goals and allows for the ‘pooling’ of cash for investing in various assets, including pension property.
